I realize how lucky I was to enter the recording
scene here in Los Angeles when I did. I’ve
heard these times described by fellow musicians
as the golden years” of recording. Live
sessions, creating on the spot and orchestrating
talented groups of musicians & arrangers together
to create something special. There were many times
where we didn’t quite know exactly what
we were going to do, but the spirit and camaraderie
among fellow musicians was always there to help
you along.
These days it feels to me that there is a need
for a new hybrid of “Artist Development”
since traditional record labels are no considering
themselves responsible to develop artists. Over
the past few years I have made myself available
for a select group of artists and have taken on
their projects as a producer and mentor and helped
their artistic development.
At the same time I also enjoy some less commercial
endeavors like the production of a double CD of
live recordings from the 1999 World Festival of
Sacred Music – the Americas, which took
place in the city of Los Angeles. Within a 10
day period, 88 performances took place in various
locations throughout the city of Los Angeles.
Working with Festival Director Judy Mitoma of
UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance I put
together a team of recording engineers to record
44 of the events resulting in this wonderful collection.
This was a huge grass roots undertaking when all
the major and independent labels turned the project
down.
If you feel there is something I might be able
to do for you, please feel free to contact me
for submission of your material. I always enjoy
hearing from new artist and if something hits
me and I feel I can help, we can talk about it.
I am also creating a residency program and taking
it to Universities and Colleges, where students
interested in recording or pursuing a career as
an artist might be able to benefit from my experiences.
I equally learn a lot from folks in these settings.
Contact me if your campus might be interested
in setting something up.
